What is blood alcohol concentration?

On Behalf of | Aug 31, 2023 | Drunk Driving |

When the police have reasonable suspicion that someone is driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol, they can stop them and administer a test to measure their blood alcohol concentration (BAC). The result will be the amount of alcohol in grams (g) per 100 milliliters (mL) of blood, expressed as a percentage.

Here is what you should know:

What is the BAC limit in Georgia?

In Georgia, the BAC limit for adults is 0.08% and 0.02% for drivers under 21. Over 21s driving on a commercial license also face a lower limit of 0.04%.

Why does the BAC level matter?

Alcohol affects the body’s functions, and the effects worsen with the increase in its levels in the bloodstream. For instance, someone with a BAC of 0.02% should theoretically be less affected than someone with a BAC Of 0.08%. The former may experience relaxation and slight loss of judgment, whereas the latter may have reduced muscle coordination and impaired judgment.

However, these effects may vary from person to person and day to day. Someone may experience major effects after consuming fewer drinks than another, or two people who drink the same amount of alcohol may have different BAC levels and, in turn, effects. Factors that may lead to these differences include age, weight, gender, tolerance levels and whether one ate before drinking.

A DUI conviction can have serious consequences in the short and long term, including prison, fines and license suspension. That is why it is so important to consider legal guidance to examine your defense options and protect your rights if you face charges.
