Making your divorce less stressful

On Behalf of | Apr 5, 2024 | Divorce |

The decision to pursue a divorce should not be taken lightly. That being said, it is often the best option for both spouses.

Traditionally, divorce has been viewed as an adversarial process and that is how many divorcing spouses have entered proceedings. Nonetheless, it doesn’t need to be this way. There are ways to make your divorce less stressful. Outlined below are a few things to consider.

Take a business-like approach

If the decision to obtain a divorce is final, then there is no point covering old ground. For example, divorce proceedings are not a place to try and go over former arguments and settle them. Many divorcing couples find it helpful to approach divorce like a business transaction. In some ways, this is what it is. You are dealing with a legal contract (the marriage) and finding a way to end that contract.

To do this efficiently and with less stress, it’s important to prioritize what matters to you. For instance, what assets do you really need? Is keeping the house a priority or can you let it go? Do you have a family business and need to find a way to keep working together, or can you buy your spouse out? If you have children, what kind of custody and visitation rights do you desire?

Come prepared

To ensure smooth proceedings, it will also help if you and your spouse have all of your financial information ready. This will help the court to assess your financial circumstances and ensure that any settlements adhere to the equitable distribution laws in Georgia.

Finally, having legal guidance can help reduce the stress of divorce. An experienced team will know what to expect and how to navigate any potential obstacles.
